Grateful Cats

I own a lot of rescue animals. Discards…the unwanted…the abandoned…those are the majority of my furkids. Mostly, I live with dogs but I also live with a few cats. I have three housecats and another abandoned cat that now lives in my salon. Because I am known throughout the community as having worked with animals my entire life, some people view me as a rescue…a place to toss out their unwanted pets. These kind of people tend to have the ‘out of sight; out of mi...

NAPCG Members do so much more for their communities than just color dogs.

NAPCG members do so much more for their communities than just color dogs. NAPCG president Bullet Brown and her staff donate much of their time to working with their local Animal Rescue Foundation located in Sylacauga, Alabama and homeless pets who are in desperate need of professional grooming services. Meet Curly. Curly was dropped at ARF in horrendous condition. Bullet and her staff spent almost 4 hours helping to relieve Curly from the filth encrusted cast that had covered his entire body....

Barking Beauties helping Beagles!

NAPCG members Tricia Stuckless, Bobbie Sinik, and Dannielle Clark participated in the 10th annual Beagle Paws ‘Walk For Paws’ fund raiser.

Please Do Your Homework

I was recently sent a link by one of our NAPCG fans to an article written for Cesar’s Way regarding creative coloring.

I read the article with an open mind, and actually agreed…with some of the information. The writer is actually referring to oxidizing dyes in this article. In layman terms, these are dyes that must...

Mr. Hyde; Professional Groomer

Posted on August 31, 2014 at 3:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Sometimes I feel like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde– suffering from a split personality of sorts. One is a perfectly normal human being: a mother, wife, pet owner who loves gardening and nature, that being my “Dr. Jekyll”. Then there is “Mr. Hyde,” the groomer in me. Oh how Mr. Hyde struggles to get out. When I am in my salon, I always unleash Mr. Hyde and allow him to ‘do his thing’ i.e. brush, pluck, bath, clip, scissor…whatever it takes to get the ...

It's About Time!

The NAPCG recently participated in the 2012 Tennessee Pet Stylists Super Show in Knoxville, Tennessee. Not only was there a creative competition with three distinct levels, but a super fun creative promenade as well. While the competitions were fun to watch, the highlight of the weekend for the NAPCG and it’s members was the presentation of the first US Silas Award.

Show Producer, Susan Porterfield, made the admirable decision to ban the use of potentially dangerous products from ...

Bleaching... Do You Know the Risks?

1. Explain the scientific difference between a black coat and a white coat.

Black and white coat is predetermined by the DNA genetic make-up of each individual. The epidermal basal cells contain melanin in different concentrations. The more concentrated the melanin particles, the darker both the skin and coat.

In a dark coated dog, there is an increased number of melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis. The way I explain it to my customers is like this; when you go ...

The "Other Side" by Justine Cosley

I recently had the great opportunity to co-judge the Creative Grooming competition at the Tennessee Super Stylist Show in Knoxville. While I have judged Model Dog competitions before, this was my first time on the “other side” of the table in a live dog competition. This task was made immensely easier by the presence of the NAPCG Judging Form that was used by both Dawn Omboy and I.

This form has been some time in the making. It was the result of a brainstorming sess...

Cults and Elitists

Posted on August 31, 2014 at 3:05 PM Comments comments (0)

Isn’t it funny how a word can mean one thing to this person and something completely different to someone else? For instance, I recently heard the NAPCG was referred to as a ‘cult’. Let’s define this word…

Webster Dictionary states the word ‘cult’ is a noun with the following meanings –

  1. a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
  2. a group or sect bound together by ve...

Kelly Clarkson and Futurama

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I do not watch television. That’s right…I admit it…I do not watch television. I do occasionally watch movies, but I simply do not have the time to watch television. Besides, there is so much violence, destruction, and depressing news, that I really don’t understand why anyone would choose to watch all that garbage.

I was recently chastised by NAPCG members because one of our members groomed Kelly Clarkson’...
